Overview
Mailchimp provides a powerful way to send targeted messages using segments. You can use Mailchimp to combine or exclude specific groups or tags for better message targeting. This ensures your communications are reaching the right people without redundancy.
Steps to Exclude/Combine Groups or Tags in Mailchimp Messages
1. Accessing Segmentation in Mailchimp:
• Log in to your Mailchimp account.
• Navigate to the Audience tab.
• Click on Segments to create or edit a segment.
2. Creating a New Segment:
• Select Create a Segment.
• Choose the criteria for your segment:
• Groups
• Tags
• Contact fields (e.g., member type, location, or activity).
3. Combining Groups or Tags:
• You can choose a group or a tag as a Segment.
But more commonly your segments will be a combination of several groups/tags.
• Use the AND or OR operators to combine criteria:
• AND: Includes only contacts meeting all selected criteria.
• OR: Includes contacts meeting any of the selected criteria.
Example: Combine members tagged as “Active Members” OR “Active Volunteers.”
4. Save the Segment:
• After defining your criteria, click Review Segment to ensure it matches your expectations.
• Name your Segment
• Save the segment for future use or apply it directly to your message.
5. Sending a Message to the Segment:
• Create a new campaign or edit an existing one.
• Under Audience, select Helpful Village.
• Under Send to select the List of Subscribers
• Choose the Segment you would like to send the emails to.
• Double-check the audience before sending.
6. Excluding Specific Groups/Tags:
• When creating a new campaign (message), in the TO section, choose the Segments or Tags you want to send your message to.
• Select the do not send to condition for exclusion.
Example: All subscribers in audience except those in the segment "Active Members"
Best Practices for Mailchimp Segmentation
• Avoid Over-Segmentation: Too many segments can lead to confusion and inefficiency. Focus on the most impactful groups.
• Review Your Audience Regularly: Ensure tags and groups are up-to-date for accurate segmentation.
• Use Descriptive Names: When saving a segment, give it a clear name that reflects its criteria.
